Archaeometallurgy in Europe 2019 conference in Miskolc

From the 19th to the 21st June, 2019 Hungary hosted an international conference repeated every four years, titled Archaeometallurgy in Europe. The meeting which is one of the most prestigious European events in the field of metalworking research was organized by the University of Miskolc, with the participation of nearly 200 researchers (historians, archaeologists, physicists and material scientists). The program included 110 lectures and 57 posters, presented in several parallel sessions.

The multidisciplinary research of the Lendület Mobility Research Group was represented by two lectures:

Dani, János, Kertész, Zsófia, Szathmári, Ildikó, Tarbay, János Gábor, Szikszai, Zita, Kiss, Viktória: Investigations of Copper and Bronze Age in metallurgy in the Carpathian Basin was presented in Session 2 (analysis of golden artefacts). In this lecture we presented the research history of prehistoric golden objects in the Carpathian Basin and the results of non-destructive PIXE studies of over 100 Copper and Bronze Age golden jewellery. Analyses were conducted in cooperation with Archaeological Department of the Hungarian National Museum, Déri Museum (Debrecen), Laczkó Dezső Museum (Veszprém), Ferenczi Museum Center (Szentendre) and the Heritage Science Laboratory of ATOMKI, Hungarian Academy of Sciences (Debrecen).

Maróti, Boglárka, Harsányi, Ildikó, Király, Ágnes, Káli, György, Kasztovszky, Zsolt, Kis, Zoltán, Tarbay, János Gábor, Szentmiklósi, László, Kiss, Viktória, Szabó, Géza: Integration of elemental analysis and imaging methods is studying production and use of bronze spirals in the 2nd Millennium BC Carpathian Basin was presented in Session 21 (Metallurgical and Analytical Techniques 3. The lecture focused on the analysis of the manufacturing techniques and the raw material of normal and oversized spiral-shaped leg- and armrings. The research was based on a cooperation with Archaeological Department of the Hungarian National Museum, Wosinsky Mór Museum (Szekszárd), Centre for Energy Research of Hungarian Academy of Sciences and Wigner Research Centre for Physics of Hungarian Academy of Sciences.

Participating among the leading research projects on prehistoric precious and non-ferrous metal artefacts in Europe, the conference provided us an excellent opportunity to evaluate our results and build cooperation.
