“Mixtura Texturalis – People and textiles in the Carpathian Basin” – Conference Report
On 19 April 2017 a joint conference was organized by the Momentum Mobility Research Group (HAS RCH Institute of Archeology) and the Momentum Medieval Hungarian Economic History Research Group (HAS RCSS Institute of History).
The link between the main themes of both research groups and the investigation of textile production has been presented by the project leaders in their opening talks. Subsequently, the first four lectures of the conference focused on Prehistoric, Roman Age, Early and Late Medieval finds from archaeological excavations. During the course of three other presentations, we could first get acquainted with the economic and social history of the Middle Ages based on written sources. This was supplemented by a summary of experiences gained from the conservation of textile residues, in particular those concerning the identification of former colorants.
The conference allowed an exciting exchange of knowledge between conservators, archaeologists and historians. The organizers hope that following the common interest of experts the dialogue between the practitioners of several disciplines in the field of humanities and in materials science will inspire other similarly interdisciplinary meetings in the future.
