Claudio Cavazzuti joins the Momentum Mobility Research Group
In October 2019, Claudio Cavazzuti, physical anthropologist at the Italian Ministry of Culture, will participate in the work of the Momentum Mobility Research Group of the Research Centre for the Humanities, Hungarian Academy of Sciences (HAS) with the help of the Distinguished Guest Scientist Fellowship programme of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
The joint research programme is based on Cavazzuti’s Marie Skłodowska-Curie project entitled EX-Space. Exploring Social Permeability in Ancient Communities of Europe című Marie Skłodowska-Curie pályázat. This two-year project (2016-2018) explored the mobility of communities in Northern Italy and relations with Central European Bronze Age cultures during the Bronze Age at the University of Durham, in cooperation with the Institute of Archeology at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the OREA Institute at the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the Museo delle Civiltà in Rome (Cardarelli et al. 2016; Cavazzuti et al. 2019a, 2019b).
In the course of the Distinguished Guest Scientist Fellowship, we will analyse cremated bone remains, with a special emphasis on female burials. Women played a prominent role in the selective diffusion of beliefs in the past (and especially high-status women); their high degree of mobility during the Bronze Age has been proved by several isotope studies (Cavazzuti et al. 2019a, b). Similar analyses were available for human remains of Bronze Age inhumation burials from Hungary so far. This joint-work, therefore, complements the research of the Momentum Mobility Research Group with new methods and results. The project also will contribute to the already existing data on mobility patterns in Bronze Age Europe, as well as the topic concerning the diffusion of cremation burials throughout the continent and the British Islands during the 2nd Millennium BC. The results can contribute to a better understanding of the relations, marriage habits and migration of the Bronze Age communities in Central Europe.
